Balding treatments vary as much as the results received and what treatment may suit one person may be a complete waste of time for another.  It is therefore imperative that a lot of understanding takes place before venturing out to use the first offer that attracts your attention.

There are two prominent  drugs used in treating balding which have been approved by most of the worlds Food and Drug Authorities that have been shown to have had a positive effect regarding balding  treatments, the first being a dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blocker.

It has been accepted that it is the hormone DHT that causes male pattern baldness.  DHT blockers were first prescribed by the medical profession for benign prostate problems and in the process the drug proved its ability to also prevent hair loss and on some occasions even reversed the balding process altogether. It takes about three months to show results and hair loss occurs again about 12 months after the drug use ceases.  It is therefore one of the safest of the balding treatments available.

Side effects are uncommon but have been known to cause sexual abnormalities in both men and women including hypersensitivity reactions such as the swelling of the lips and skin rashes.

Women of child bearing age are normally told  not touch the DHT blocker drugs as there is a risk of birth defects, even from an unprotected partner.

Another popular drug comes in the form of an ointment and is effective in about 25% of men with baldness on the crown. It has to be applied twice a day and the resulting hair growth only occurs as long as it is used. This drug was originally approved to treat high blood pressure. Once again side effects are not common but it should not be used by people with a medical history of experiencing heart problems, unexplainable weight gain, pains in the chest, fainting, or even rapid heartbeat.

Other options include hair transplants, tissue expansion – which is basically the stretching of the hair baring skin – and scalp reduction which is a similar surgical operation as is tissue expansion.
